SDATA and ArtsFest will help us spring into art!

SpringfieldArtsfest_headerSouthwest District Art Teachers’ Association’s Spring Show is on April 13th at Drury Pool Art Center. This is the 7th-12th grade contest along with the portfolio show. SDATA is not only open to MAEA members this is open to any and all art teachers so spread the word and let’s pack the show. Along with the show there will be several workshops to choose from. Visit the SDATA website for more information.

ArtsFest is looking to team up with MAEA for some LIVE art! There are two ways you and your students can be involved: tape sculptures or printmaking helpers. We are looking for groups to sign-up for times to help run a LIVE tape sculpture area. The tape will be provided all you need to do is let us know of a time you and your students would be able to help. We would ask that you sign your students up at a time you will be there. If your students can’t help and you are interested in helping that works too! We are not sure on how the admission cost will apply yet, but we are looking into our options and will let you know ASAP!

Or volunteer to with Julie Jones to help out at a printmaking station for kids! We are looking for high school and older to help in this area. Volunteers will help show participants how to create monoprints using cookie sheets and Qtips and stamps.

This is a great opportunity to get your Art Clubs involved in community art. Please let me know if you can help! maead10@gmail.com or reply to this post! Come out D10 let’s start making ArtsFest an annual D10 event.

Artsfest 2013 is May 4-5

Festival Times: Saturday, 10am-6pm, Sunday, 10am-5pm
Location: Historic Walnut Street, Springfield, Missouri      Artsfest tickets are $3 in advance at area McDonald’s restaurants beginning April 18 and $5 at the gate. Children 5 and under are free.

Artsfest on Walnut Street is celebrating 33 years of showcasing the arts in Springfield. The annual fine arts festival will take place on May 4 & 5, 2013 on Historic Walnut Street and will feature over 140 artists from across the country.  This year’s festival theme is “Art is…”

Dawn King of Glenwood sent me information on WEST PLAINS, Mo. – Artwork by area elementary school students will take the spotlight during the annual Art Around Town exhibit April 3-14 at the Gallery on the Mezzanine at the West Plains Civic Center.

Sponsored by Missouri State University-West Plains’ University/Community Programs (U/CP) Department, the event, in its 13th year, will feature two- and three-dimensional pieces by children in grades kindergarten through eighth from the following school districts:  Bakersfield, Dora, Fair View, Gainesville, Glenwood, Howell Valley, Junction Hill, Koshkonong, Mtn. View-Birch Tree, Richards, Thayer, West Plains and Willow Springs.

Thirty pieces of artwork from each school district – a total of 450 pieces – will be displayed in the exhibit, organizers said.

The exhibition also will include an awards ceremony at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 7, in the civic center theater, followed by reception on the mezzanine.  The works will be juried by art instructors from the region, organizers said.

“I always look forward to the Art Around Town exhibit,” said Felicia Combs, Art Around Town committee chairwoman and art teacher at Mtn. View Elementary School.  “It gives us a chance to show off our incredibly talented youth and to view the activities taking place in our colleagues’ classrooms.

“For 13 years, Art Around Town has given young artists an opportunity to display their talents and compete for ribbons and prizes,” said U/CP Theater and Events Coordinator Emily Gibson.  “I hope everyone comes and visits these amazing pieces of artwork created by so many talented students.  It is truly an amazing display, and the students will appreciate the attention to their work.”

Area residents are invited to view the pieces during regular civic center hours, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

For more information about Art Around Town, contact the U/CP office at 417-255-7966.  For more information about U/CP programs, visit the department’s website at wp.missouristate.edu/ucp.
